About us
We are Dermatest® – Leading the way in skin safety
Dermatest GmbH is an independent dermatological test institute based in Germany, providing preclinical and clinical testing services for the cosmetic industry. We specialize in regulatory affairs, patch tests, Safety-in-Use tests and in vitro analysis to evaluate the tolerability and efficacy of cosmetic products, materials, food supplements and consumer goods. Our services ensure that products are skin-friendly and safe for consumers. The Dermatest seal of approval labels products that have undergone rigorous, science based testing, ensuring reliability and consumer confidence. Founded in 1978 in Münster, Germany by Dr. Werner Voss, dermatologist, we were the first dermatological test institute on the domestic market.
Our extensive team of experts tests all products and materials that come in contact with skin: Cosmetic products, materials and commodities. Additionally, we offer nutritional supplement testing. We carry out these studies in our own regional test centers from a selection of over 5,000 test subjects. We test and evaluate to make products safer to use and to ensure their effectiveness is measurable and comparable. We have 45 years of experience with reliable dermatological studies.
Experts for product testing
Our regulatory affairs team ensures that your cosmetics comply with EU regulations. This includes Cosmetic product Safety report (CPSR), safety assessment, product classification, CPNP notifications, PIF compilation and consultancy on labeling, claims, or ingredients.
We provide comprehensive patch testing services to verify the safety of your products. We offer standard, photo, scarification and tape-stripping patch tests and perform them on normal, sensitive and atopic skin.
With our Safety-in-Use studies we confirm the product safety and skin tolerability under real world conditions. We design flexible studies tailored to your product’s category and objectives. In addition to irritation and sensitisation potential, the efficacy can also be analysed.
In our laboratory for in vitro analyses we test skin and eye compatibility according to OECD guidelines. Using full thickness skin models we further provide detailed insights into your product’s efficacy by e.g. evaluating collagen production.
Our commitment to support product claims with the highest standards
We perform in-depth tests on all products – including cosmetics, materials, and food supplements plus nutraceuticals – that have an effect on the skin. Ensuring the safety, trustworthiness and measureable efficacy of all type of products. Always with a scientific background individually developed and optimized four your needs. With our Dermatest® seals, we create confidence in the retail sector and certify product safety.

HypoSense®
Our HypoSense® checks your product even more intensively. Of course, an ingredient check is also carried out here first. This is followed by both an epicutaneous test and a Safety-in-Use test on 30 test subjects with sensitive skin. In addition, of these 30 test persons, 30% have neurodermatitis, 30% are allergic and 20% are asthmatic (only for Safety-in-Use testing). Another major advantage is that you can define and add more detailed inclusion criteria and efficacy analyses for the Safety-in-Use study. The Safety-in-Use study takes place for at least 4 weeks and a final epicutaneous test is included to additionally check the sensitization potential.
Combining high-value methods
Creating safe and effective "Hypoallergenic" products is a top priority for the cosmetics industry. We’re committed to meeting consumer needs while ensuring product safety. Traditionally, this claim relies on HRIPT testing, which has raised ethical concerns and lacks precise protocols. We’re exploring scientifically-backed alternatives to enhance product safety claims. Our goal is to provide clearer information to consumers, making "Hypoallergenic" labeling more transparent and consumer-friendly.
Original Dermatest® 5-Star Seal of Approval
The 5-Star Seal applies to long-term application tests which provide the maximum possible protection in order to rule out as far as possible subsequent skin reactions among the target demographic: products which have been tested in this way can be claimed as “Clinically tested”. The aim of our Safety-in-Use studies is to investigate products for tolerability and, as appropriate, efficacy according to clinical dermatology criteria. This service applies to the Original Dermatest® premium sector. Studies with this distinction go beyond determining the potential for skin irritation in terms of their significance.
